What is a head of innovation?
The head of innovation identifies improvements that could be made to existing products. They also work to develop new, innovative products to fill gaps in the current market. Experience in this area is transferable between many industries.
The daily activities of a head of innovation
· investigating problems with current products and gaps in the market
· liaising with suppliers of materials
· testing existing products and new technologies and reporting the findings
· overseeing new product branding, sales, quality, marketing and manufacturing
· keeping up to date with new technologies and manufacturing techniques
HOURS AND ENVIRONMENT:
Typical hours: around 37 per week.
Environment: office, laboratory and on-site at production facilities.
SKILLS AND INTERESTS:
· an appreciation of market trends and consumer buying patterns
· a scientific or marketing background
· excellent communication and team working skills
· organisation, project management and problem solving ability
· IT, science and maths skills
ENTRY :
Unlike some jobs in technical textiles, it may be possible to gain entry to a career in this area with experience in more general areas such as garment technology and marketing.
ANNUAL INCOME :
Starting salary: around £50,000 a year.
Rising to: between £60,000 and £75,000 a year.
