Project Scientist
What is a project scientist?
A project scientist works to improve existing products and develop new textiles. Many medium sized and larger textiles companies will employ a project scientist and experienced workers in this area may be able to work on a freelance basis.
The daily activities of a project scientist
· conducting tests and evaluations and then reporting the findings
· producing prototypes and technical briefs for sales and marketing teams
· devising new products to meet performance specifications
· overseeing the brand development, sales, quality assurance, marketing and manufacturing of new products
· investigating customer problems and faults
· keeping up to date with new technologies and manufacturing techniques
HOURS AND ENVIRONMENT:
Typical hours: around 35 a week.
Environment: office, laboratory and on-site at production facilities. Travel within the UK and overseas is common.
SKILLS AND INTERESTS:
· in-depth knowledge of textiles and how they are produced
· an understanding of customer markets
· knowledge of chemistry and testing techniques
· good problem solving ability
· team work and communication
· organisation and planning
· commercial awareness
· research and report writing
ANNUAL INCOME :
Starting salary: around £18,000 a year.
Rising to: between £25,000 and £45,000 a year with experience.
