Analytical Textile Technologist


What is an analytical textile technologist?

Analytical textile technologists are responsible for solving questions relating to textile manufacture. Technologists of this type are required in many different areas of technical textiles.
 
The daily activities of an analytical textile technologist
 
Analytical technologists carry out tests on products to:
 
·        solve technical questions relating to manufacture
·        check the quality of the material
·        analyse faults and test fitness for purpose
·        check the fabric contents are listed correctly
 
They can work for textile manufacturers or as a consultant in a variety of companies, such as retailers or manufactures. Extra tasks include:
 
·      liaising with staff, clients and customers
·      using technical equipment, such as microscopes and infrared
·      developing new testing techniques for different materials
·      recording, interpreting and reporting the results of tests
·      being aware of health and safety issues


HOURS AND ENVIRONMENT:


Typical hours: 37 per week.

Environment: laboratory and office, protective clothing may be required.



SKILLS AND INTERESTS:

 
·      interest in science, specifically physics
·      good understanding of textiles and how they are produced
·      a logical and inquisitive mind
·      time management and the ability to work to tight deadlines
·      good concentration levels
·      laboratory testing and reporting skills
·      team leading ability


ANNUAL INCOME :


Starting salary: between £15,000 and £20,000 a year.

Rising to: between £25,000 and £30,000 a year with experience.
