Technical Textile Designer
What is a technical textiles designer?
A technical textiles designer is responsible for the design, product development and sometimes manufacture of technical textiles. They may work with research and development teams or to a customer specification.
The daily activities of a technical textiles designer
· devising products to meet performance specifications
· developing prototypes
· using specialist Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to produce a range of designs
· testing new fibres and fabrics and recording the results
· researching new processes, techniques and technologies
· writing reports and cost estimates
HOURS AND ENVIRONMENT:
Typical hours: around 37 per week.
Environment: based within a laboratory, office or production facility.
SKILLS AND INTERESTS:
· understanding of textile structures, manufacturing processes and textile chemistry
· design and fabric construction skills
· research and problem solving skills
· the ability to conduct tests
· good project management and communication skills
· IT skills
· the ability to document research findings
ANNUAL INCOME :
Starting salary: around £15,000 a year.
Rising to: between £25,000 and £35,000 a year with experience.
