Analytical Textile Technologist

Dr Phil Greaves works as an analytical textile technologist for his own company, Microtex.

Having left school with 16 O-Levels (equivalent to GCSEs) and an interest in science, Phil got a job with the International Wool Secretariat (now The Woolmark Company) this experience lead him to set up Microtex in 1992.

“My job involves the analysis of a variety of materials, for example, identifying whether a flaw a fabric has been caused by a manufacturing defect or misuse by the consumer. I often use microscopes for analysis and sometimes infrared and other specialist techniques.”

Phil set up his company, Microtex having realised a need for his skills in a variety of companies. He now works on a consultancy basis for different clients including legal institutions that require expert witnesses.

“Recently, a consumer came to me because the fibres were falling out of their carpet. After looking at a sample under the microscope I could clearly see teeth marks, which told me that moths had attacked the carpet. It turned out that the carpet had been bought from a country that did not use moth-proofing agents.”

Phil has had a long and successful career in textile technology, here he gives his tips on how to succeed:

“My advice for anyone wanting a similar career to mine is to have a textiles background. You must also be willing to learn the expert knowledge required and gain good work experience. Above all, you will need to be disciplined, accepting of strict testing methods and have a naturally inquisitive mind.”
